Description
Scarce early original vintage silver gelatin Type l first generation photograph shows the 98th Field Artillery Battalion on maneuvers in Centralia Washington.They are shown here operating a 75mm howitzer shortly before America’s entry into World War ll.
Full caption and press stamps are on the backside (see scan).
This is not a copy or reproduction but a Type 1 first generation photograph developed from the original negative and dated Aug/41.
This photograph is from the personal collection of military historian Colonel John R. Elting.
Colonel Elting was a soldier for thirty-five years (1933-1968). He was continually in military service until 1947 with the 71st Armored Field Artillery Battalion, the Tactics Department of the Armored School at Fort Knox, Combat Command B, 8th Armored Division in the Rhineland, Ardennes, Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns, 24th Field Artillery Battalion of the Philippine Scouts). In 1948 he was recalled, after a short civilian interlude as a teacher, and was assigned to the Armed Forces Information School and, from there, to the Military Academy, West Point.
After his retirement, he turned his attention to writing and research and was a considered an authority on all aspects of military history. He wrote or coauthored 16 books on this subject.
Photograph measures 8 x 10 inches and is in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity. Back has be enhanced to read caption.
