Description
In November of 1943, my father was a B-17 pilot flying missions out of England. He bought this card intending to send it to someone for Christmas. On November 29, 1943, he and his crew were shot down (you can read more about this at my wordpress blog 'aboxofoldletters". Specifically, in the post, "Watching Hogan's Heroes with my Dad"). Needless to say, the card didn't get sent and came home with his personal effects. It remained in the same box his mother put it in for over 70 years.I have one other of these cards that he did mail before getting shot down, that one is going to the 8th Air Force Museum in Savannah will all his papers and memorabilia from that time. This one is for sale.
It was printed by the well-known printing house, Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. in London. In 1940 the company lost its headquarters and most of its graphic art to German bombing. This was printed after they got up and running again.
Folded, it measures 3 7/16" x 4 13/16". Unfolded 3 7/16" x 9 1/8".
