ORIGINAL Photo Native (Indigenous) Couple Scavenging WW2 Materiel ? Betio Tarawa

Description

Up for sale is a most interesting photo that is likely from World War II.  It shows a native (indigenous) couple next to a makeshift abode that appears to have been constructed and furnished from scavenged war materiel.
The couple are located in the top left quarter of the photo.  The man, in a loincloth, is kneeling at the entrance of the dwelling.  The woman, who appears to be topless, is standing to his left.  In the foreground is a large tire, a wheel or gear, and a very large log sitting on top of some type of engine or apparatus.  There is also a pile of smaller logs or branches.  The home has a smoke stack and smoke is actually issuing from the top.  The entire scene appears in a clearing surrounded by a forest.
This photo measures just under 5 inches tall by just under 7 inches wide.  It is sepia on a matte finish.  There is no identification as to the date or place.
I obtained this photo from the estate of a long deceased World War II veteran who served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate (A.M.M.).  I am selling other WWII related photos from this estate.  Information on and associated with those items suggests that this photo may have been taken on the island of Betio in Tarawa (the Gilbert Islands).  The veteran may have been a member of CASU 17, Division 1 (CASU stands for Carrier, or Combat Aircraft Service Unit), a unit which was documented to have landed on Betio only four days after the bloody November, 1943 battle in which US troops occupied a very heavily fortified Japanese outpost.
This photo apparently had special significance for the veteran because he framed and hung it.  (The simple metal frame was very generic and in poor condition; it is not included in the sale.)  By contrast, the other photos were stored in various scrapbooks.
