This coin was issued under Fakhr al dinMohammad III
ibn Tughluq (AH 723-734, 1323-1333 AD),
under the
rule of Tughluqs
, Delhi Sultans.
It was minted in AH 726 (
1325
AD) in
Madurai Region
, southern India.
The region had
changed to Madurai Sultanate
in AH 734 (
1333
AD). Madurai Sultanate was
a short lived independent kingdom
based in the city of
Madurai
in Tamil Nadu, India. The sultanate was proclaimed when the then
viceroy of Madurai
, Jalaluddin
Ahsan Khan
declared his independence
from the Delhi Sultanate. Ahsan Khan and his descendants ruled Madurai and surrounding
territories until
1378
when the last Madurai sultan fell in battle against the forces of Vijayanagara Empire by Kumara Kampana.
